Suicide ranks as one of the leading causes of death for young people aged between 15 and 19 years; it accounts for 30% of deaths of 15-24 year olds. Between 600 and 800 young people — the equivalent of the population of a small secondary school — commit suicide each year. They represent the extreme end of a depressing spectrum of social dysfunction and fractured childhoods prevalent in England today. While the triggers or causes of depression amongst young people may not appear to be major events for many adults, anxiety and stress are among the most common mental health problems in young people. Mental and emotional health of young people is an important feature of their overall well-being – it affects how young people feel, perceive, think and communicate. Consequently, the credit card sized Break the Ice leaflet that provides young people encourages young people to tackle feelings of anxiety, stress, depression. It provides useful contacts, suggestions of who to talk to and methods for positively channelling their feelings.

Description content for this Copyright: Swimdamentals allows swimming beginners the chance to use land-based activities to build up the skills and confidence required in water. The Swimdamentals scheme has evolved from working with children in sports for years and being a part of their developing confidence. I quickly saw that land-based skills were readily transferable to the water and developed this range of activities to enable practitioners to deliver a structured skills-based programme to ensure progression. Swimdamentals works with many games that are used in land-based sports and are transferred from land to the pool. Swimdamentals is a progressive, structured scheme, leading to acquisition of confidence in water. Working in water is something that many swimming beginners have a fear of and something that Swimdamentals can hopefully resolve, using these land-based games with a slight tweak to allow the beginners to build confidence and allow them to move freely in water. An activity such as juggling with a balloon can be used on land, for example in a classroom with children. The main task is working on the skill of balancing and keeping the balloon upright for as long as possible. Once the children can work in groups of four and can balance the balloon in the air together for more than a minute, the fundamental skill has been achieved. The beauty then is to transfer this land based skill into the pool. The children would then visit their local swimming baths and repeat the land- based skill in the pool. To balance the balloon in the pool allows the children to have achieved a Swimdamentals skill on their way to completing one of ten activities in the pool.

Description content for this Copyright: ‘TO BE FRANK’ by R J Breese is the first book which will make up ‘The Chronicles of Political Change’ and follows a disenchanted politician in 2042 who reluctantly fronts a secretive government project on a recently discovered planet habitable for human life. The tagline throughout the series of books will be ‘there is an alternative’, with the protagonist FRANK NOON a politician with a difference. He’s open, honest, genuine and trustworthy. He’s a visionary thinker, able to air his largely anti-establishment views due to his affinity with the proletariat. He’s stoically left wing yet thinks some criminals can’t be corrected and should be destroyed. He thinks drugs and brothels should be legal yet doesn’t take drugs and is a prude. He detests racism and homophobia yet thinks joking about such subjects should be mandatory. He’s a dreamer who can’t understand why more people don’t commit crimes disguised in fancy dress. He loves boxing hates fighting, loves to preach yet hates public speaking. In short he’s a contradiction in terms but fails to see the irony when, in the year 2042, he’s asked to front a government project concerned with reforming similar personalities. On the back of a controversial speech about climate change, during which Frank goes so far off subject that he demands an atheist society and speculates about the evolution of robots and rats, the government think that they can solve two problems in one. An outspoken Frank and the very real issue of overpopulation. As a solution an increasingly totalitarian government decide to utilise the recently purchased Planet Muta and think Frank the ideal man to head up their intergalactic mission, one deemed successfully tested by the US and China. Informed that his brief is a three month experimental trial in a town called Clashville, to try and reform those who have been selected by a personality profile machine, Frank is entirely dumbfounded. The concept of extreme and contradictory personalities doesn’t register and, amidst his confusion over the whole project and the lack of forthcoming clarity from the government, he decides he can’t refuse the opportunity to financially secure his family’s future for three months work. Initially he struggles. The more he learns about the project the more barbaric it appears, and, horrified that he’s put his name to an assignment he considers so despicable, he consistently and unhealthily delves into the realm of psychology of self. His active mind combined with the various afflictions of the people in his midst leads to him guiltily shying away from interaction, and the environment created in Clashville seems to most closely resemble an asylum. He finds an ally, motivator and complicated romantic proposition in RUBY WU, a girl sent to Clashville in error, but instead of heeding her advice about cultivating friendships he sets about his task by deciding to utilise CARMELA, a therapist whose technique is to criticise rather than listen. When he receives a call from the government, during which they refer to the residents by their humorously intended nicknames, Frank is outraged. Knowing his charges are being referred to by such disdainful monikers as a racist hippie, vegetarian gangster, posh chav and competitive rastafarian he becomes more attentive and protective towards them. Combined with Ruby’s revelations about the abusive nature of Carmela’s therapy he decides that a different method of rule is the way forward, the final straw a tragic death which he emotionally takes full responsibility for. Life in Clashville begins to blossom under Frank’s leadership, he sets up regular meetings where between preaching’s he encourages group interaction, and many of the residents find freedom, enjoyment and a confidence in themselves that they didn’t in the outside world. Despite further setbacks, notably when his enthusiasm for boxing and hatred of cruelty to animals marry together, he seems to be making real progress and, after the residents show their support for him, his only concern as they enter the last month of their stay is a distinct lack of government contact. Frank then receives a startling call from Carmela, who was sent home after the failure of her therapeutic experiment. She reveals the true intention and scale of the project, and suddenly, with only two weeks left, Frank has to assess the information that not all of the residents are scheduled to return and that they’re not the only people on Planet Muta. Carmela’s information verified by the discovery of human remains and a sighting, Frank decides that for the sake of humanity they have to stay on and explore further. He successfully manipulates the extra time, touchingly gets the support to do so from almost all the residents, and sets about his vocation, instinctively aware that there’s no time to consider the ridiculously climactic nature of the situation. Surrounded by a support team including RUBY, ANGUS, LOUIS, and CHARLES, or as the personality machine would deem them - normal, a frugal philanthropist, honest estate agent, and alcoholic scientist - Frank realises that he may be able to make a real difference to people’s lives for the first time in his life.
