Description content for this Copyright: Hi my name is Warren Stevens and with Chris Hidderley, Jodie Stutt and Mavis Spenser we have founded this brand new charity, working with mental health and wellness issues in the equestrian industry. Mental health within the horse industry is a multifaceted problem of terrifying proportions. For a number of reasons the health of our people is overlooked, unseen or worse ridiculed. Each year we lose people working within the industry to this problem in the shape of suicide, they honestly believe there to be no alternative, that they could not get well again. They fear they would be judged or ignored, lose employment or work if they tried to confront their disease and seek help. Mental illness does not discriminate and our charity recognizes that, grooms, riders, braiders, farriers, managers, owners and drivers, amongst all other individuals on every crevice of the industry need help at some point to maintain good mental health. It is imperative to us that everyone has access to the tools to do so. There has been research, fuelled by good intentions, into why mental health issues are so virile in our sport. However I do not believe there to be one clear answer to this and we cannot lay blame at any segment/demographic of the industry. Riders, owners, managers, fellow grooms, show directors….. we are all responsible for each other and can all contribute in some form. That acknowledged; there are unfortunately areas within the sport that are unacceptable in society that run rife in the horse industry. They are where where we are ALL guilty of turning a blind eye at times or disguising an issue under a layer of humour. Some things may be referred to as a right of passage even. Worrying isn’t it. Examples include many facets that interweave and overlap, sometimes making the industry a perfect storm for mental health problems. Some examples will easily come to mind: Bullying. Unfortunately we do not need to look hard to witness bullying within the industry, be it by our fellow coworkers, riders, owners, the in gate guy, the guy across the aisle from you etcetera. It’s not always just teasing or just a little bit of fun, we need to recognize when those lines are crossed. Low wages and long hours No groom started out in the industry to get rich. However we have no implemented legislation across the board for this. Generally Employers are able to dictate how much an employee earns when they work and if and when they have time off. It is not uncommon to find an employer will use an employee’s status in order to manipulate their wages/ working conditions. For example if an employee is waiting for residency status they cannot leave their current job. Accommodation It has long been the foundation of many jokes, however still in the 21st-century too many people employed in the industry are provided with subpar accommodation conditions. Many find themselves with good accommodation yet if they need to leave their position they are faced with homelessness. This is a major contributor to grooms staying in a situation detrimental to their health. Travel. The opportunity for extensive travel is often a huge perk of the job within the industry, however as everything it does have cons that overtime may start to outweigh the pros. If individuals are only really seeing a horse show and not experiencing travel for the cultural and educational aspects then It can often be a very lonely isolating experience. This can be exacerbated when one misses out on important events back home, weddings funerals, medical appointments, birthdays etcetera. Behaviour traits OCD is an admired trait in our industry, we praise it, highlight it, reflect on it comparatively and strive to emulate it. That blanket has to be absolutely shavings free and those braids have to be social media worthy. I believe we are all guilty of turning a blind eye to situations where this pedestaled quality spirals into anxiety and stress. At what point is it too much? What is evident is that we need to do something, together as an industry. We need to peal back the layers, address the problems and work, cohesively, to get help to those that need it. We believe that talking about these issues is a start but it will never solve the problems, it will not resonate with those most debilitated by mental health disease. We want to help people before they reach a point where they feel they have no options. Body image and abuse Body image causes a whole kaleidoscope of difficulties and problems in society and the horse world is no stranger to its curse. The equitation and the showing world are the easily stereotyped disciplines to use as examples. We know that body image anxieties, bulling and eating disorders are so common place in young adults especially in these sectors, it doesn’t even shock us anymore. It is almost as if we have come to expect it. “She is the right figure for riding equitation”. On a personal note I cannot entertain the idea of my child or any client of mine trading their health for a ribbon. There area plethora of issues not touched on in this introduction but we all know what they are. Subjects such as sexual abuse, substance dependency and self harm are uncomfortable to confront and as such often lived with in shame and secrecy. We need to break these restraints. It will be no easy task. Stablemind CIC is a charity set up by people in the industry for our peers and coworkers. Our aim is to have a pool of Phycologist’s and guidance councillors we can refer people to and further work into why the equine industry suffers so much from mental health issues. We will also provide help and assistance for grooms in need of short term accommodation.. Randomly turning up at shows and providing food and drinks at the stables where the only food they can get is what they have to pay for, there are endless options.. We are hiring relief accommodation to give grooms in need a breathing space. We are looking to provide alcohol and drug support , if that is also required. People are talking about these issues, but who is actually doing anything to help? We are a registered Ltd company in Companies House London, and have applied to the charities commission for approval, we have taken every step to protect this idea from being abused. How can you help? As a charity we rely on monetary donations. We need to secure financial aid to ensure this charity can reach out to those in need. But along side that and argumentatively more important we need ambassadors, promoters and sponsors in every way possible. Can you sponsor a food tent, do you have a platform within the sport that you can use to promote this cause. At this infantile stage going forward we also need and crave ideas, advice and help, whatever size and shape they take. Maybe you can share personal experiences to help us reach out and encourage those most in need to seek help. I am incredibly grateful for your time invested just to read this, I hope I outlined what the charity aims to do in a way that is relatable to you, whatever your position in the horse industry.

Description content for this Copyright: Written by Andrea Vecchiato and Margo Stilley 50 years ago, Faelon was a teenage boy who became very ill. His little brother, Callum, who is touched by the spirits of the forest, convinced him to let him do a spell on him so that the fairies could heal him, but instead of becoming well, they stole his body and turned him into a Hybrid fairy - used to lure girls into the forest to impregnate them with Fairy babies. In shame, Callum fled other human contact and became the caretaker of Albion, an ancient forest and cottage owned by Lily and Cora’s family. 10 years ago, Cora (8) and Lily (10) are playing in the woods and Lily is bullying her. They go back into the house and Lily convinces Cora to go and play in their Father’s study, which is off limits to them. She finds the key and they sneak in. Their Father is a psychiatrist who is studying psychedelic effects on the mind. (The parents think that Callum is quaint and adds to the charm of the area.) Lily accidentally poisons Cora with magic mushrooms after pretending to take them herself and saying that they make it so you can see the fairies. Cora falls into a coma and her parents are wracked with guilt and depression. They can’t help but blame Lily who should have been looking after her little sister. Desperate to put things right again, Lily runs out to an ancient magic tree and begs the fairies to make her sister well again. The fairies are listening and they approach Lily with a deal. Phobos/The Red woman, the shape shifting, gender bending leader of all the forest spirits offers to trade the spirit of Cora with their own daughter’s spirit so that Cora can recover in the Fairy world where she will be treated like a princess and Lily and her parents can have ‘Cora’ back for 10 years only. On the Summer Solstice in 10 years they will return to take their daughter back to the Fairy Kingdom. Lily takes a lock of hair from Cora and takes it to the Loving Tree and the exchange takes place, but it doesn’t heal the family. Their parents divorce and Cora is never the same again, her fairy spirit finds it hard to survive in this world. Present Day: Lily, a studious nerd, has been in University studying Anthropology while Cora, who is more troubled, is living in London singing in a band. Neither of them has been back to the cottage since the accident 10 years ago and they have never spoken of the exchange or the fairies because Cora has been weird ever since. Lily knows that the 10 year limit is up, so for the Summer Solstice she brings her friend Grace, from college back to the cottage. Her intention is to strike a deal with the fairies when they come to get their Fairy Daughter. Lily wants to trade Grace for her real sister Cora, who has been living in the fairy world.
